About this piece

The pichwai hung behind the deity at Nathdwara, and its vocabulary has barely changed in three centuries: the tree at the centre, the cattle that Krishna tended, the birds returning at dusk. Here the painted ground is overlaid with couched gold, and each pearl and stone is set by hand. The border is a braided zari, turned at the corners in the old manner.
